Who should I contact if I have to miss my scheduled reading session?
Send a fax to your student at their school or call your School Coordinator. Do not contact the EW! office.
Can I send a coworker or friend to substitute for me if I cannot make my reading session?
Only if they have enrolled as a Reading Mentor and have completed the application process.
Is it okay for my student to read to me?
The majority of your reading session should be spent reading to your student to help build their listening and comprehension skills. If your student feels comfortable reading to you for a short time, that is allowed. Many students do not want to read aloud and should not be forced to do so.
How can I get my student more interested in reading?
Let the student take an active role in choosing the kind of book that he/she may like to read. If there is a special subject or chapter book series that is missing off of the book cart, tell your School Coordinator and we may be able to find it for you. Refer to your Reading Partner Handbook for helpful tips on reading aloud.
Can I give my student a gift?
No. Your gift of time, attention and friendship with your student keeps the focus on sharing the joy of reading! If you give your student a gift, other students begin to expect gifts from their mentors and it causes unnecessary conflict. If you want to recognize you student or honor a birthday, we suggest that you give a book to the book cart and inscribe the child's name on special plates that we provide. Notes, cards and letters hand delivered at the school to your student are always appropriate.
Can I see my student outside of a Power Lunch session or during the summer?
Contact with your student outside of school hours is prohibited. You are allowed to attend special school functions, such as a play or Honors Asssembly, that takes place during the normal school day.
